For the first time in nearly half a decade, the Jerrys Plains Cup is back following a long overdue hiatus.Scheduled for Friday 30 April, local leading trainers, and those from around NSW will compete for the $22,000 Cup prize pool.
Muswellbrook Race Club is running the event with the support of Malabar Resources, and will be the focal point of the Jerrys Plains Open weekend, which will include a planning day for the Jerrys Plains bicentennial in 2022.
Muswellbrook Race Club CEO Duane Dowell said the club was very excited to put the cup back on this year.
“The Jerrys Plains Cup has been on the cards for a few years now, but COVID-19, terrible weather and bad luck have made it impossible.
“But after speaking to Jerrys Plains local and race club director Jim Rodger, who expressed a desire to reintroduce the cup, and with the support of the local town and Malabar, the stars finally aligned!“
Closer to the event, we’ll be able to confirm which local trainers and horses will compete, and so far, I’m hearing strong enthusiasm which should translate into a great turnout.
“We are still under strict COVID-19 restrictions which need to be observed by all that attend. This includes recording the details of attendees upon entry along with the mandatory Services NSW QR Code registration system,” Duane said.
The Muswellbrook Race Club is one of the oldest continuous race clubs in Australia, having been established in 1862, and is one of the largest Regional Training Centres in Country NSW.
Former club president and Jerrys Plains veterinarian, Jim Rodger, who is one of the bicentennial organisers said: “The Jerrys Plains Cup will be part of the broader celebrations and planning for the Jerrys Plains bicentenary festivities that will occur over the next 12 months.
“We are all very excited with what’s in store and will be announcing further details in the coming weeks.”
Malabar’s manager of Health, Safety, Environment and Community, Donna McLaughlin, said the company was delighted to sponsor the event.
“The Jerrys Plains Cup will provide a real boost for the area as it recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, and with that in mind, we’ve included a hospitality package that will assist local business and industries in the community.”
